Workdate 27-Dec-09While we have started servicing some of the groomers to get them ready, we still have a couple more to finish up and another that we picked up, that we have to get set up to help with the added mileage this year.
According to AccuWeather... "cold January with snow" between now and the 1st, were supposed to see 8" of snow and then depending on how the storm in the midwest tracks... looks like another nor'easter??? I think at this point that the trails are fit up pretty well and should make for some very enjoyable riding as long as mother nature takes care of her part!
As the trails open, RIDE SAFE and RESPECT our LANDOWNERS!

( 2.9 / 243 )We've managed to put in another couple of weekends continuing with our signing and re-marking portions of our trails. We started the pre-season with somewhat of a list of projects that we really wanted to accomplish. We started on them by what we felt was higher priority, but as the season progresses it becomes harder and harder to do that part of our trailwork, which leaves us with just signing... which is no less important, just less exciting. What we don't get done this year, providing it isn't a safety concern, will be what we will try to focus on at the start of next year. Nothing is left that would leave the trails impassible, just things that we feel would make more comfortable improvements on the trail itself.
As we approach the start of our riding season, I just want to send out this reminder though, as the first riders go out, please BE AWARE that not all gates may be open yet. Deer season isn't over until (I believe, the 22nd) and these landowners don't want the intrusion until then. And as well, the trails are still closed under 6" of snow. With minimal snow cover, there are still hidden trail hazards that can also do damage to your sled. Just take the first ride easy and look the trail over and enjoy the ride!

( 3 / 233 )(11/22) Another weekend we were able to send 3 seperate crews out in dfferent directions to catch up our signing.

(11/29) Another weekend (beautiful sunshiny)spent signing and also were able to do some last bit of mowing that has been hard to get at. The trail leading into the park in town had some goldenrod head high and some hardhack that hasn't been mowed down for about 4-5 years. The beavers had gnawed into some trees and tops that we had to move and some stumps that were left needed to be leveled. A couple of us took the time Wed. eve before the rain (ok, we got a litte wet toward the end)to put in a short 12' bridge where the water goes down into the swamp. We went up and made sure any other mowing around back of the Holiday Inn Express was taken care of. Mostly because the landowner had also mentioned that the bridge across the creek by the Fun Park was starting to shift and thought we'd mow while we were there. When we got there we found that the beavers there had also been busy (oh geez-busy as a beaver) they had damed up the water starting under the leading edge of the bridge as well as 25 yards below and the water was just to the bottom edge of the bridge. So we tried to relieve this as much as possible and I'm sure we'll have to go back as the beaver lodge was just about 25 yards up stream of the bridge. This may need some work in another year. A couple of other crews worked on some signing on out through C7E (old S71F). It makes it a bit tough to sign as we need this time of year with deer season in full swing 'cause its tough to get back in woods because of the hunters, but we'll get what we can and try to finish as weather permits. Trails should be opening in another 4 weeks (sure didn't seem like winter today) THINK SNOW!

( 2.9 / 217 )We've taken another couple of weekends to get some brushing and signing done.
(11/1) One crew worked on signing C7E starting from Cnty 35 up Rabbit Run then over to Peters Rd and a couple of us started signing into Bette and Wilbur Davis State Park.
Another crew put a tube in the ditch on Bice Rd (seasonal rd) and brushed and signed from Bice Rd. to Bissell Rd. 8 members and 2 jr members 9:00-5:00
(11/8) Spent another day brushing and signing C7D off of Lougheed Rd to Loucks Rd. There is a section that we've cleared before, just after the tornado came through years ago, that we finally just took and widened, to hopefully take care of the briars that constantly droop in and snag your clothes and scratch your hoods and windshields and we also changed out the posts to the ones we painted orange for better visibility.
We then moved onto our club trail from the town barn to the village. This was previously labeled S71E, we've never received funding for this, it is essentially just a club trail so its new designation is just 534. We had complaints last year of excessive speed on this trail, especially where we had signs where kids sleigh down hill, so we re-routed the trail across the top of the hill away from this, so please note this trail change.

( 3 / 187 )This was a great workday, we had enough help show up (even new members) to go off in 4 seperate crews.
Not every weekend, will we have a specific project that we are doing, but simple signing and brushing are all as important and this gave us the opportunity to do just that. One crew worked on a section on our new C7E (old S71F) continuing to open this new section, another crew worked on a section on C7D (old S71A). There is a steep hill off of Lower Dutch Hill Rd, that we felt would be safer and easier if we made an uphill and down hill, making it a divided trail. Another crew worked on S71B on the other side of the stateland, clearing briars,tall goldenrod and changing out signposts for more visible ones. And still another crew worked on C7D between Goey Pond Rd and Seminary Rd where we have an uphill grade coming into a blind corner. With the landowners permission and help actually, we were able to push out the edges of the corner to improve visibility of traffic coming up or down the hill and to ease the sharpness of the corner. Some crews made more of a day of it than others, but it is all in what was required where they were working and how much time some have to give. Remember this is, all volunteer! And we do appreciate all help!
